Whitley Warriors 4, Durham Wasps 8… and on paper, with a bigger squad, and an extra import, Whitley should have mauled us. But, with some cracking performances from Durham lads such as Stephen Foster, Karl Walker and Jonathan Hesler, the revived Blue Machine pulled off a win.

The biggest result however, was off the ice. With over 2,300 fans turning up, and more than a thousand coming from Durham, the attendance was a testimony to the demand and desire for all of this to be brought back – 21st Century-style, of course.

So, what happens now? We’re continuing to carry on our behind-the-scenes work, but riding on the wave of publicity and enthusiam following last week’s game, maybe the time is right again to give the powers-that-be a reminded that Durham needs its ice rink back. We’ll be contacting all of the newly elected local councillors in the next couple of weeks to get them on board, and if you live in the Durham area… maybe you should do the same. You should be able to find contact details from your local district council’s website. Get writing. Tell them what you want!
